Training for Councils.
“Training is the most powerful weapon we have in our Armoury and it must be used to overcome the challenges that lie ahead”
A brand new training scheme for community and town councils (see below) has been developed and is being delivered across Wales. For details of training events being held near you please look at our Training Calendar.
In 2005 the Welsh Assembly Government, acting on the recommendation of the “Aberystwyth Study” set up a National Training Advisory Group (NTAG) which was tasked to develop a National Training Strategy (NTS) for community and town councils in Wales. This was published in September 2006 and circulated to each council in Wales. Following feedback from the councils an implementation plan was developed and the decision taken to procure the production of training packages that had already been developed by Ken Burton of One Voice Wales.
In August 2007 the NTAG invited tenders for the development of training packages and the successful bidder, BTC Group of Llandudno, was commissioned to produce the packages.
The packages have been designed on a modular basis with units that can be delivered in 2.5 hour evening sessions, this being the preferred format of the majority of councils that responded to the consultation in September 2006.
The modules cover:
- The Council
- The Councillor
- The Council as an Employer
- Understanding the Law
- Council Meetings
- Local Government Finance
- Community Engagement
For more information on what each module covers, see Module Overview.
We may be able to offer bespoke training solutions tailored to the needs of Councils who require training in areas not specifically covered by the standard seven modules. If your Council would like to enquire about possible options please email:- paul.egan@onevoicewales.org.uk
We can also deliver any of the standard modules direct to any one Council or group of Councils who are able to offer a suitable venue in their locality.
Please email:- paul.egan@onevoicewales.org.uk with your request.
Training for Clerks
See the Clerks' Training page for information on the new CiLCA Wales qualification. This reflects and complements the CiLCA qualification which has been available for English clerks for some time but more accurately reflects the needs and legislative changes demanded by Wales.
