One Voice Wales Annual Conference 2009
The 2009 national conference for community and town councils in Wales was held on Saturday, 10th October in Pontrhydfendigaid near Aberystwyth.
The theme for the conference was Developing Your Community and it focused on how councils can enhance the communities they serve. Speakers included Dr Brian Gibbons AM - Minister for Social Justice and Local Government.
In addition to hearing the latest thoughts from the Minister on the role of community and town councils, the conference demonstrated how a group of councils in Gwynedd have worked together to take on additional services from the county council for the benefit of their community - a model which could be transferred elsewhere in Wales.
Dr Liz Bickerton and Liz Court presented lessons coming from a major research study on the role of community councils in developing their communities. This included the links with the local Community Strategy in which community and town councils are set to play a greater role in the future.
