Team Building for Llandyfaelog!

Cllr Mair Stephens reports on the team building event which was Llandyfaelog Community Council’s prize for winning best community website competition. Having won the best website it seemed only reasonable that we should continue the good work and take up the team building offer. It is right to say that Llandyfaelog Community Councillors took on this expedition with a little trepidation.

Team Building for Llandyfaelog!

Team Building at Llandyfaelog

Being of a wide age range what could we expect  - Boot camp; would we be made to look silly or even would the team, which we considered we were, function?  Eventually the date was fixed, but since the weather was inclement prior to the day I suppose we were all secretly praying for a deluge!

The day dawned and 4 members and the clerk ventured to Pendine. Although the weather was fine it was cold and damp underfoot. Most of us had either been involved with the YFC or other youth groups and had taken part in ‘It’s a Knock Out’ competitions. This stood us in good stead and despite all our reservations we had to think our way through 5 tasks – all involving transporting water as well as ourselves from one place to another! To all our surprise we did not get too wet!  But what did you do, I hear you ask – move tyres from one place to another in the least number of moves; take water and people from a to b on a type of ski; go through a spiders web – how were we (delicately) going to decide who was lightest to go through the highest holes? The inevitable ‘raging torrent’ crossing using planks, empty beer barrels (what a pity) and milk bottle crates and then ending by getting the ‘dragons head’ to the top of the pipe by pouring in water and covering the holes to stop the water getting out of the pipe!

Getting to grips with some car tyres! All this exercise was followed by a welcome cuppa and the temptation to have a game of table tennis which we had to be dragged away from to head for the archery section. While we had to work as a team in the first half of the morning this was where the competition really started. It is suspected that some of us were not as truthful in their previous accomplishments in this field but hey we were all having fun!

So did the team building work. The answer is a resounding YES. We each learnt others abilities and perhaps something new about each other and on the way home there was a lot more chat about the day. Do not be surprised if you live in Llandyfaelog area to see some of the ideas are recycled ( Nothing like being sustainable!) If you ever have the chance to go on a team building exercise------GO FOR IT.
